The crashes occurred about 8:56 p.m. and involved members of the same riding party, according to the department.

Isabelle Marsh, 21, of Alstead, lost control of her trail bike while navigating around a gate near Chandler Mills Road, causing the bike to fall on its side, officials said.

About 4 miles east, Daniel Surber, 25, also of Alstead, crashed head-on into a gate after failing to see and navigate around it, according to Fish and Game.

Newport Ambulance transported Surber to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Newport police and fire, New Hampshire State Police and conservation officers responded to the scenes.

Officials said speed, low light and alcohol were believed to be contributing factors in both crashes.
